Artist Notes While I've never much liked long flights, I have always marveled at how the flight from America to Europe compresses time. You board in the evening, they feed you dinner, you watch a movie, you fall asleep and then you wake up to fresh tea and breakfast, a rising sun and ready to land with a full day ahead of you in Europe. It's as if a full day has elapsed. If only...

On this particular journey, I wound up with a very chatty British seatmate who kept going til sometime after Iceland. I wanted very much to sleep, but it was not going to happen. So instead I strolled the Virgin plan, up to Upper Deck and back and marveled at all of the sleeping innocents. Hah, I thought, as the sun began to peer across the horizon. I'm getting to see the new day before any of them. I hurriedly returned to my seat, secured my most essential camera gear, film and scurried back to the east-facing window and waited for just the right image. This is that image.
